Beastmen Review - Razorgors

Those Ugly Things

Razorgors aren’t exactly the prettiest models in the game, and I personally hate the miniatures however they are particularly useful in the game. Firstly they make your opponent physical sick with their visual repulsiveness and secondly they’re a right pain in the ass. Razorgors are one of the best ‘chaff’ units that the Beastmen have to offer and are great at prolonging your deployment and being a nuisance in game. So what makes them so good?

Selection

Razorgors run fantastically in singles, so I usually play with two single models which are great for deployment placement when coupled with a pair of Ungor Raider units, you’ll already be four ahead before you even need to consider placing your chariots, which even I’d consider ‘chaff’. I have tested running units of three and they can seriously pack a punch although they usually draw some attention and tend to get shot at or magic’ed off the table. Having them in large groups also allows you to put Minotaur characters in them forming a pretty hardy unit as the Razorgors are tougher to kill than Minotaurs and will cost you the same in points. This can lead to some pretty nasty combinations as an impact from a unit like that will smash absolutely anything to pieces. All of this for 55 Points is an absolute bargain and I think every Beastmen army should have some to prolong deployment and harass the enemy.

Key Strengths

Firstly Razorgors are brutal on the charge, if they’re lucky they’ll be able to topple a giant or kill a character as the Thunderous Charge ability can literally smash anything apart. And it’s this killing ability which makes them so annoying especially when they’re running around on their own, and of course herds of Razorgors will seriously pack a punch!
This leads me onto movement and boy do this ugly buggers move quickly, with a march of fourteen, these guys can fly up the flanks and be harassing artillery and small arms fire by turn two. This offers them up as being perfect speed bumps, and generally being ‘in the way’ which will help your large blocks of Gors and Bestigor later in the game.
And the great thing is that you’re not too bothered if they die, mainly because a butt ugly creature has been put down, but also because they’re so cheap and they’ll have more than likely killed double or treble their weight in points. In fact, to be honest, they’re pure win – so take them!

Weaknesses

It’s very easy for this ugly critter to get scared and will run away if panicked, and it’s very easy for chain panic to run rife through your Beastmen ranks – so be careful. However it is great when you pass a Leadership five panic check and throw him up the table! A slight gripe I have is that the Razorgor doesn’t have Primal Fury even though the Chariot pulling versions do, even though you’re not relying on the Razorgors killing anything in particular it would be nice to have the opportunity to make them FURIOUS!

8th Edition

I wouldn’t change a lot; I think that they’re brilliant! Perhaps adding Primal Fury to them or perhaps giving them Impact Hits would give them a bit more of an edge, but overall I think they’re a great part of the army that is essential for every Beastmen player to field.

Painting

The model is pretty shit, but its fun to paint… If you can find an alternative then do it, because you’ll be sick every time you look at the blasted thing.
Stupid bulging eyes are not a cool look…
